Pedometer keeps you in shape

By Emilie Le Beau - 01/07/2009

The fight against fat in the United States isn't going well. By the year 2030, about 86 percent of Americans will be overweight or obese, estimate researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

About two-thirds of U.S. adults are currently overweight or obese, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Regular walking is credited with keeping adults at a healthy weight. But a cheap pedometer can sabotage efforts. In a CDC study, participants given a low-cost pedometer found that it only functioned about 60 percent of the time.

A quality pedometer might cost extra money but it can mean reliability. Brunton Inc. has several pedometers that go beyond basic counting.

The PED-Alert has an alarm system for safety when walking alone. It tracks steps, distance and calories burned. The built-in memory function is meant to recognize false movements and ensure accuracy. Cost is $42.20.

Another option is the PED-Radio which is similar to the PED-Alert. Instead of having the alarm feature, it has a radio and nine channel memory. Cost is $42.20.

The PED-Digital provides the basics time, distance and calories burned. It has an extra large reading display and measures just 1.7 by 1.3 inches. Cost is $26.60.

All items are available at Brunton.com or call (800) 443-4871. Check local retailers for similar products.
