It's been a while for the Gardiner Bruins.
Gardiner won its first volleyball district title in 10 years at the Maroon Activities Center on Saturday by sweeping Shields Valley.
The Bruins won the District 8-C Volleyball Tournament despite an early five-game battle against White Sulphur Springs.
Shields Valley was forced to play three straight matches after losing out in the quarterfinals on Friday. Fatigue took a toll on the Rebels and by the time the title game rolled around, the hard-hitting team couldn't win a game against Gardiner.
Gardiner, Shields Valley, White Sulphur Springs and Sheridan all advanced to the Western C Divisional Tournament next week. Montana Tech will host the event.
Championship
Gardiner 3, Shields Valley 0
Shields Valley started off cold and couldn't hang with the Bruins until the third and final game.
Gardiner claimed the victory
25-15, 25-11, 25-21.
The district championship was the first for the blue and gold since 1998.
"It felt good," Gardiner coach Carmen Harbach said. "Our goal was to win districts. The main goal is to go to state."
Gardiner had four players with at least five kills. Seniors Dana Brennan and Melissa Rees both
had six.
Emily Bischoff and Maddie Hoeninghausen added five kills apiece.
The Bruins were most successful on defense by holding Shields Valley to 22 kills, the team's lowest total of the day.
Junior hitter Jordan Dyke smashed 11 kills in defeat. Senior Susanne Grobler added five on her own.
Coach Harbach felt that the win was a complete team effort.
"I'm pleased with the way the girls played," she said. "They know there's more work to go."
Gardiner's coach added that rival Shields Valley may have been tired after playing the three matches straight and four total on the day.
"They were tired," Harbach said. "They're a good team. Susanne Grobler played a good match. Jordan Dyke played a good match too. They're competitors."
Gardiner was led by Austin Smith in assists with 21. She also nailed six aces.
Shields Valley also had standout performances by Michael Ann
McInerney with 18 assists and Katlyn Tomschin with 10 digs.
Both teams will move on to the divisional tournament at Montana Tech next week. Harbach said she appreciated the effort Butte put into the district tournament.
"The tournament was run really well," Harbach said. "This is a great place to play. I'm excited to play at Tech next week."
