Shrader second, Dennehy third at State Cross Country meet
MISSOULA — Butte High sophomore Ethan Shrader claimed second place in the Class AA boys' race at the State All-Class cross country meet Saturday at the UM golf course in Missoula.
Butte High junior Keli Dennehy claimed third in the Class AA girls' race, while Whitehall's Chloe Palakovich was third among the Class B girls.
Dillon's boys placed third in the Class A team scores, while Drummond's girls claimed third among Class C teams.
Class AA Saturday was one of the best days ever for individual Butte High runners.
Shrader actually led the boys' race until the last quarter mile, when he was passed by Bozeman's Jordan Schlender.
"Ethan's just starting to figure out how to run a three-mile race," said Butte High boys' coach Liza Dennehy. "It makes you excited to look at next year." Butte freshman Josh Panasuk was 17th, a half second from making the top-15 All-State group.
"Josh was on the wrong side of a pack at the finish line," Dennehy said. "As a freshman he's had a whale of a year." Another freshman, Logan Shrader finished 45th at 17:13, drawing praise from his coach.
"Logan's running well," Dennehy said. "Over the course of the year he did nothing but get better. He's got a lot of potential for improvement." Butte's Cramer Clark was 82nd at 18:12.85, Bryan Harbert was 90th in 19 minutes flat, Phillip Dean was 92nd in 19:04.01 and Kaleob Palmer was 94th in 19:17.80.
Butte High hasn't had a champ in the boys' race since the mid 70s when Mike Houlihan won. The last Bulldog to place second was Diego Hammet in 1989.
Keli Dennehy's third-place finish was the best performance by a Butte High girl since 1978, when her mother, Butte High boys' coach Liza Dennehy (then Merrifield), placed second at the state meet. The next-best girls' finish came in 1981 when Lori Merrifield (Keli's aunt) took fourth at state.
"For a long time, there were just three runners, Heidi, Alexa and Keli," said Butte girls coach Laurie Rossberg. "They hit the top of the hill and Heidi and Alexa took off, but Keli stuck with 'em." Gwenn Abbott was 54th at 21:16.42, Summer Sullivan was 80th at 22:34.25, Mary McCarvel finished 87th at 23:14.48, Hannah Dysinger was 91st at 24:30.75 and Ashley Kelly was 93rd at 25:00.50.
The fastest senior in the girls' race finished 13th, so there'll be plenty of competition next season.
"They're all back next year," Rossberg said. "It's something to look forward to, a new challenge." Class A The Dillon Beavers boys' cross country team finished third at the State A Cross Country Meet.
Dillon finished with 149 points. The runners were behind state champs Hamilton, who finished with 77 points, and Columbia Falls' 125 points.
Jonathan Ries was Dillon's top See STATE, Page B5 finisher taking 13th. Calon Lochridge ran well for 25th place.
Scott Merenz was 13 places out of finishing All-State in 28th place.
Anaconda's best runner was Ray Laslovich. He rounded out the top 100.
Whitefish finished first in the girls' race with 43 points.
Lewistown and Hamilton tied for second with 89 points each.
The Dillon Beaver girls reeled in a seventh-place finish.
Talitha Smith led that effort as she crossed the line for 11th place.
Dillon's Ali Pelletier and Cindy Atchley both finished among the top 45.
The Anaconda Copperheads' top finisher was Dana Anderson in 76th.
Class B Whitehall's Chloe Palakovich raced to third place in the girls' Class B race, clocking in at 18:59.84. She was 15 seconds off the time of race winner Heather Demorest of Darby.
Boulder's Brittany Johnson also finished in the All-State ranks, placing 13th with a time of 19:46.38.
The top finisher from Deer Lodge was Theresa Lombardi in 33rd at 21:05.56.
Matt Stout of Darby won the Class B boys' race, followed closely by Mike Asay of Manhattan. Area All-State finishers include Travis Buttleman of Three Forks who was 11th at 16:43.42, and Ryan Ovenell of Manhattan Christian, 15th in 16:49.78.
Class C The Drummond Trojan girls' cross country team took third at the State C Cross Country Meet.
Megan Oberweiser finished in ninth with a time of 20 minutes, 43 seconds to lead the effort.
Drummond also had All-State finishes from Jessica Paske and Kenzee Gray.
Belt-Centerville claimed the girls' title with 19 points. Drummond had 38 points.
Philipsburg's Elly Hogue took 24th. Melanie Graham finished in 28th for the Prospectors.
Ennis' Kelsie O'Connell took 46th.
Joliet edged Winnett for the State C boys' title.
Ennis' Gavin Owens finished in second place with a time of 16 minutes, 17 seconds. Gage Owens took eighth for the Mustangs.
Harrison runner Ryan Hamilton put up a 10th-place effort for the Wildcats.
