Guess you have to see what happened to the other guy

Sideline Chatter

By Dwight Perry - 10/08/2008

Ty Lingo, the wrestling coach at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, Wash., came up victorious—except in the health department—when he scored a second-round submission in his first Mixed Martial Arts bout last Friday.

As Lingo told The Spokesman-Review: "I have a black eye and a broken finger but otherwise feel fine." STRIKE UP THE BANNED "The University of Wisconsin marching band has been suspended for allegations of hazing, alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct," noted Reggie Hayes of the Fort Wayne (Ind.) News-Sentinel. "The good news is the Badgers are now only one drummer in drug rehab away from meeting the requirements for a spot in the next generation of VH1's ‘Behind the Music.' " FASHION STATEMENT In this modern era of long, baggy uniform pants, shouldn't there be a baseball team called the No Sox?

BULLS, BEARS, BYU Confused? Brigham Young's unbeaten football team has a bye week and rises three places to eighth in the AP poll, then beats Utah State by 20 and drops a notch.

"Think of it this way," wrote Brad Rock of the Deseret News. "It's a lot like the stock market. You knew the gains couldn't go on forever. This week was just a market correction." COMIC ECONOMICS Among the top 10 ways to make the financial crisis more fun, courtesy of CBS's David Letterman:

  • "Put it all on Ball State and give the 16 points."

  • "Hire O.J. and his goons to steal back your money." BUT WHAT A WAY TO GO Former Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington and his wife got to know the late actor Paul Newman through their mutual love of jet boats, but Newman left his biggest impression on land.

"He drove Eva around a racetrack in California at some ungodly speed," Pocklington told the Edmonton Journal, "and she said, ‘If I'm going to go, I guess it's with Paul.' " NEWS FLASH Mixed martial arts star Gina Carano, after two failed attempts to make weight for last Saturday's 140-pound match in Sunrise, Fla., finally did it on the third time—by stepping on the scale after stripping down to nothing.

Which certainly gives a whole new meaning to "naked aggression." SAM HE AM What, you think it's easy sharing a microphone with ex-NFL lineman Mike Golic on ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike Show"?

As co-host Mike Greenberg told podcaster Dan Levy: "It is impossible to have a conversation on a high, intellectual level with a man whose idea of fine literature begins with Doctor and ends with Seuss." TALKING THE TALK

  • Redskins tight end Chris Cooley, to Washington's WWDC-FM radio, after Eagles fans pelted the team bus with eggs: "You know what, though, they're good shots. They've been practicing. You could see them coming in; they were leading the bus. It was good egging."

  • NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, to The Associated Press, after causing a multi-car pileup at Talladega Superspeedway: "I always worry about the idiots when I come here, and today it was me."

  • Tony Augusty of The Detroit News, on the Lions' continued struggles despite the ouster of its beleaguered GM: "You can't spell Marinelli without Millen."

  • Vancouver (B.C.) comedian Torben Rolfsen, hoping that those Yankee Stadium urinals get cleaned before memorabilia collectors are allowed to bid on them: "That's one sports item you don't want billed as ‘game-used'." PAGING PREACHER ROE Yes, police really did arrest a baseball player in Galveston, Texas, for his part in a wedding-reception brawl: Astros pitcher Brandon Backe.

What, you were expecting Buddy Groom, Jim Rice or Bake McBride?
