Outside Magazine recommends 50 places to get away from it all NEW YORK (AP) — Need a place where you can get away from it all? Outside magazine's October issue suggests 50 places, from canyons to coasts to urban escapes.
In the deep canyons category, the magazine recommends Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colo.; Mokelumne Canyon, Calif.; Green River Gorge, Wash.; and Pleiades Canyon, Utah.
In the lost coasts category, Outside mentions North Core Banks, N.C.; Padre Island National Seashore, Texas; Shi Shi Beach, Wash.; Cape Cod National Seashore, Mass.; Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, Calif.; and Milolii Beach, Hawaii.
For empty peaks, try Standing Indian Mountain, N.C.; Gannett Peak, Wyo.; Mount Bond, N.H.; and Wheeler Peak, Nev.
Remote cabins can be found at King of the Hill, Georgia; Ridgway Hut, Colo.; Cabin Creek Cabin, Mont.; Peaceful Cove Cottage, Hawaii; and Uganik Lake Cabin, Alaska.
Deserted island include Doliver Island, Maine; Cayo Costa State Park, Fla.; Eagle Island, Ga.; and Posey Island State Park, Wash.
Wild roads suggested by Outside are State Route 375, Nev.; Natchez Trace Parkway, Tenn.-Miss.; Route 66, Ariz.; and Route 112, N.H.
For long walks, try Joshua Tree National Park, Calif.; Pecos Wilderness, Mexico; North Country Trail, Upper Peninsula, Mich.; Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, Vt.; and Theodore Roosevelt National Park, N.D.
In the secret waters category, there are Upper Middle Fork of the Flathead, Mont.; St. John River, Maine; Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minn.; Upper Selway River, Idaho; and Turkey Creek Hot Springs, N.M.
Seven "city sanctuaries" are Mount Auburn Cemetery, Boston; The Huntington Library, Los Angeles; Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago; Japantown, San Francisco; The Nomad World Pub, Minneapolis; Dreamy Draw Recreation Area, Phoenix; and The Boathouse at Fletcher's Cover, Washington, D.C.
The final six getaways in the Outside article are the Delaware River rapids between New Jersey and Pennsylvania; the Museum of Natural History, New York City; Dalton Highway, Alaska; Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Wis.; Steens Mountain Wilderness, Ore.; and Canyons of the Escalante, Utah.
Abstract art exhibit opens in St. Louis ST. LOUIS (AP) — A major exhibit of abstract art opens in St. Louis in October.
The Saint Louis Art Museum will host "Action/Abstraction: Pollock, de Kooning and American Art, 194-1976," beginning Oct. 19. The show is described as the first major U.S. exhibition in 20 years to re-examine Abstract Expressionism and the movements that followed.
The exhibit comes to St. Louis after several months at the Jewish Museum in New York. It will travel to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y., after it closes in in January.
The show includes masterpieces by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Arshile Gorky, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, Jasper Johns, Lee Krasner, Frank Stella and others.
Admission to the rest of the museum is free but this exhibit will be ticketed.
