Letter: Forest plan violating rights of Montanans
By The Standard Staff - 03/25/2008
We all value our inalienable rights as Montanans. We value our right to have plentiful elk to hunt, rivers of trout to fish, peaceful trails to walk with our families.
With their new plan, the Forest Service is not showing the proper respect for these rights. But now they’re asking for public comment to make revisions to that plan — make sure you tell them what you think.
People have the right to ride vehicles in our forests, but not everywhere. Where it damages the landscape, chases off wildlife, or degrades water quality, the Forest Service has a duty to keep it off the land.
Places like the East Pioneers, the Dolus Lakes area in the Flint Range, the Snowcrests, the Italian Peaks — these are some of the places we should protect for future generations, so Montanans will always be able to go there and fish, or backpack, or hunt, or canoe…in peaceful and beautiful wilderness.
Tell the Forest Service so, at www.wildmontana.org.
