Tech wins big grant from science group

Montana Tech recently secured a $593,450 grant from the National Science Foundation.

The money will be used to fund 20 $6,500 annual scholarships for incoming freshmen, renewable for four years.

Doug Coe, the dean of the College of Math and Sciences, and Amy Verlanic and Annette Kankelborg of the Technical Outreach office, worked collaboratively on the Montana Minds Scholarship grant.

The scholarships will be awarded to students intending to major in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or software engineering. The grant also has special features to help ensure success, including faculty advising, student tutors/mentors, trips to national science and engineering laboratories, and assistance in attending a national conference in the area of their major for juniors or seniors.

The goal of this scholarship is to award talented students from Montana high schools that have been traditionally under represented in college, and particularly in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, a chance to pursue their dream of going to college, a spokesman said.
