On the links: Tech men take tourney

n Lewis-Clark women on winning side

By The Standard Staff - 09/14/2005

Lewis-Clark State first round leader Nikki Olson reacts to her missed putt for par on the ninth green of the Butte Country Club Tuesday during the final round of the Montana Tech Invitational.

The Montana Tech men's golf team pulled off a rare accomplishment Tuesday — the Orediggers won a tournament.

Led by freshman Mitch Evanecz's 4-under-par 66, the Orediggers shot a blistering 280 on the Butte Country Club to win their own tournament with a 54-hole total of 872.

Tech shot 299 and 293 in two rounds Monday.

Evanecz's 5-over total of 215 was good for third place in the individual standings.

Rocky Mountain College's Kelbi Lee won with a 213, followed by Lewis-Clark State College's Jeff Smith at 214.

Tech's Jason Johnstone, who was playing with the Orediggers' No. 2 team, tied for fourth at 216 — which really says a lot about the Orediggers' depth this season.

Oredigger Jon Johnstone placed sixth at 217, while Byron Olson and Tyler Williams each fired 222, one shot out of the top 10.

Lewis-Clark, which shot a 291 Tuesday, placed second behind the Orediggers at 878. Rocky was third at 882.

On the girls' side, Lewis-Clark State's Nikki Olson's 235 three-round total was good for first place and led the Warriors to an easy team victory.

L-C's 984 was 27 shots better than second-place Rocky (1011).

The University of Montana-Western placed third at 1106, followed by Carroll College (1142) and Tech (1222).
