Patriot Act film tonight starts series at Tech
By The Standard Staff - 02/15/2005
A free series of documentaries start with a film about the Patriot Act at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Montana Tech's Main Hall Room 112.
The fourth annual series is sponsored by Montana Tech Peace Seekers, Taking Action for Peaceful Solutions and Butte's Sacred Ground. The series continues on Tuesday evenings through April 26.
George Waring of Tech's Liberal Studies Department will host the new public policy series and lead post-film discussions.
"It offers citizens a great opportunity to understand how the current political system really operates," Waring said.
The films range from a discussion of the problems in the USA Patriotic Act of 2001 to the David-Goliath issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The series begins Tuesday with a one-hour video that is timely to Butte given the upcoming Wednesday vote of the commission to oppose unconstitutional aspects of the USA Patriot Act. "Unconstitutional: The War on Civil Liberties" is sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union and produced by Robert Greenwald, the producer of "Uncovered" and "Outfoxed." The 2004 film provides the history of the USA Patriot Act as well as recent infringements on the due process rights of Americans.
