Free Speech for Sale' showing Wednesday
By the Standard Staff
This week's offering in the free U.S. Politics Today series at Montana Tech focuses on the role of TV and radio advertising in shaping public policy at the state and federal levels.
"Free Speech for Sale" is a 1999 Bill Moyers' PBS Special the fourth of eight documentaries being shown Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at Tech, in Room 113, Science and Engineering (the first building next to Marcus Daly statue).
The series is sponsored by the Montana Tech Liberal Studies Department, Sacred Ground and the Butte peace seekers, Taking Action for Peaceful Solutions.
Wednesday's documentary focuses on the dominant influence of corporations in the public policy process.
"Our democracy is drowning in free speech paid for by huge corporations," Moyers said. "The First Amendment has long been our protection against a too powerful government. However, today, commercial interests have become so consolidated that they have become an equal threat to our civil liberties."
Each film is introduced by Montana Tech history and government professor George Waring; and a discussion follows.
Other films upcoming:
June 18 "The USA Patriot Act"
June 25 "Roger and Me"
July 2 "Election 2000: Whose Vote Counts?"
July 9 "The Men Behind the War on Iraq"
